大宋淳祐七年，钦州灵龙镇灾患频现，民间谣言乃蛟龙作祟，需将童男童女投入锁龙井喂食蛟龙方能得享安宁。祭祀恶俗持续多时，不知多少无辜孩童葬身龙腹，灵龙镇哭声震天，家有幼童者皆人心惶惶。新科进士庄严担任主簿后，坚持进入锁龙井调查蛟龙事件，却不想竟因得罪龙王而锒铛入狱。灵龙县仵作小宛为救心上人，不远千里求请已金盆洗手的宋慈出山查明真相。案件疑点重重，宋慈和小宛联手突破重重难关，终于赶在庄严被斩之前查明真相，庄严得以平反，小宛也在众人的见证下正式向宋慈拜师学艺。然而眼看灵龙镇逐渐恢复平静，宋慈却发现原来真相并没有他想象中那么简单。

　　PARK Duk-joon is an old man living by himself. Every night, he suffers from insomnia attacks brought on by disturbing flashes from his dark past. He tries in vain to pray and find solace in religion. His only friend is Mrs. LEE, a church elder who gives him weekly church bulletins. Mrs. LEE invites him to a testimonial at her church. Duk-joon is surprised to see the face of the speaker. He is LIM Gwang-han, Duk-joon’s former superior officer from his days as a police interrogator in the 80s. They meet for the first time in years, Gwang-han brings up Duk-joon’s painful past again.

　　Like Fritz Lang, David Fincher or Bong Joon Ho before him, talented debut filmmaker Lado Kvataniya uses the concept of police detective vs serial killer for an excitingly stylised, macabre and haunting narrative, that ultimately revolves around the identity of an era: in this case, the late 1980s Soviet Union. With Glasnost and the end of communist rule, the West also learned of the (unsurprising) fact that there were serial killers in Russia too – the most notorious case probably that of Andrei Chikatilo, nicknamed the Rostov Ripper, or the Russian Hannibal Lecter.
　　Based on these and many other sources, Kvataniya and screenwriter Olga Gorodetskaya constructed an immersive psychological puzzle, jumping back and forth in time, to reveal ever new-possible motives for the actions of all the protagonists.
